Simon Anderson got online in 1992 and has been involved in every aspect of the Internet ever since. From helping people configure their modems in the days of 14.4k dial-up, to building websites in HTML 3.0 for Netscape Navigator, through the dot-com crash, to the birth of blogging and the current web 2.0 revival. Simon currently runs a boutique Internet Strategy company, Silver Yeti and an Internet Marketing Company – Fizzy. Simon is also a veteran of these Internet companies:

  • Internet Solutions (RSA) – South Africa’s first & largest ISP
  • Band-X (UK/USA) – First ever bandwidth trading exchange
  • The Bunker (UK) – Most secure Web hosting company in the world
  • Shooting People (UK/USA) – One of the first niche social networks.  ‘Facebook for filmmakers’ long before facebook even existed.


  • Developed South Africa’s first commercial Intranet
  • Attempted to found the first ever commercial ISP in Mozambique
  • Made short films and documentaries and started a film production company
  • Marketed the Digital Freedom Expo. With Jimmy Wales (founder Wikipedia), Larry Lessig (founder Creative Commons) and Brian Bhelendorf (creator Apache). This was the first major expo in South Africa dedicated to Free Software and content.

Top 3 Strategy Books

I find this impossible to answer…I think Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching is the ultimate but this goes beyond even strategy and into an exploration of the ineffable. Instead I am going to put the 3 books I refer to the most lately…all have a distinctly realpolitik flavour
